The Tech Lead

I have often wondered, what it is to be a good leader. What qualities make a leader.

Here's a great collection of qualities that together probably give a clue...

  • Places common gain as the primary consideration (as against self gain)
  • Is transparent/shares information freely
  • Remains calm and collected in difficult situations
  • Allows freedom for others to experiment or innovate
  • Shows a high sense of ownership and accountability
  • Demands high quality of work
  • Leads by example; practices what (s)he preaches
  • Challenges status quo and facilitates change
  • Deals comfortably with ambiguous/uncertain situations
  • Adapts quickly to new situations
  • Keeps abreast of recent trends in her/his field
  • Willingly takes risks for potential benefit
  • Makes decisions balancing different aspects (people/client, long/short term) in the picture
  • Clients rely on her/his suggestions/judgment (builds trusted client relationships)
  • Displays business acumen in decisions and actions
  • Learns from mistakes and failures
  • Demonstrates the courage to admit mistakes
  • Anticipates issues and deals with them proactively
  • Confronts problems; takes action to deal with them
  • Connects with people
  • Facilitates and encourages collaboration
  • Shows how the team’s work fits into the relevant larger picture
  • Provides a shared understanding of goals
  • Influences others through his/her ideas or thoughts
  • Treats people with respect and fairness
  • Includes people from diverse backgrounds in his/her team
  • Helps people learn and grow
  • Listens actively to other people’s opinions or ideas
  • Provides regular and meaningful feedback
  • Stands up and fights for what is right
  • Is punctual and manages his/her time well
  • Is self-driven
It's a huge list. Quite a stretch for most people. But that's why I guess good leaders are rare.
